Washington, D.C. – Tonight, Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee are set to release the text of their budget proposal. Republicans have been dead set on cutting billions of dollars from Medicaid, the nation’s largest health care provider, covering more than 70 million Americans. According to analysis by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, Republicans cannot achieve their savings targets without deeply cutting Medicaid, which would rip health care away from millions of seniors, children, people with disabilities, and hardworking families.

In response, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:

“Republicans revealed their true colors tonight by proposing far-reaching policies to rip health care away from scores of Americans for one reason and one reason only – to pay for tax cuts for billionaires and big corporations. No matter how Republicans dress it up, they are taking away health care from seniors, people with disabilities, expectant moms, and children to make the wealthy even wealthier. If Republicans think they’ve avoided the political consequences of doing so they have another thing coming.”

Medicaid is an indispensable pillar of our economy and health care system. It provides health care to more than 70 million Americans with Medicaid, including seniors, children, veterans, people with disabilities, workers who don’t get coverage through their jobs, and people who take care of their children or elderly parents. Cutting Medicaid is also politically perilous. Poll after poll after poll finds a majority of voters, including most Republican voters, oppose any cuts to Medicaid. As Republicans are feeling the heat for their unpopular plan, they continue to lie to the American people about the devastation this budget will cause.
