U.S. Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Tammy Baldwin, Representatives Bobby Scott, Jim Costa, Judy Chu, Don Beyer, Greg Stanton, Deborah Ross, Dan Goldman, Jennifer McClellan, Yassamin Ansari, Maggie Goodlander, George Latimer, Kristen McDonald Rivet, Suhas Subramanyam, James Walkinshaw, and Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis to Join Protect Our Care

Over the past week, Protect Our Care has held 17 events with 16 members of Congress demanding Republicans stop the destruction of Americans health care, restore $1 trillion in cuts to Medicaid, and extend the health insurance tax credits permanently. Since taking power, Donald Trump and congressional Republicans have launched an all-out war on our health care system. If they are successful in ending these tax credits, millions of families will pay up to 90 percent more for their health care while millions more will lose coverage altogether.

Republicans are running out of time to come to the table and pass a bipartisan budget to clean up the mess they made and protect hard-working families. While Democrats fight for accessible and affordable health care, Republicans keep pushing a dirty bill to slash Medicaid to the bone and end the tax credits for working people, all to help their billionaire and big corporation allies. Enough is enough: Republicans must stop playing games with people’s lives and protect our health care.

CALIFORNIA

Thursday, September 25 – ePTC Accountability Event with Congresswoman Judy Chu, Congressman Jim Costa and California Health Care Advocates: Congressmembers Judy Chu and Jim Costa and physicians Dr. Jerry Abraham and Dr. Michael Geiger joined Protect Our Care California to discuss the ongoing Trump-GOP health care disaster and the urgent need to stop GOP premium hikes. “Republicans just passed a law so ugly it will kick 15 million Americans off of their health insurance by gutting Medicaid and weakening the Affordable Care Act.” said Rep. Judy Chu. “And now, they want to do even more harm by allowing ACA enhanced premium tax credits, which make health insurance affordable for 24 million Americans, to expire. Democrats are standing up to protect these credits and protect Americans’ health care from further Republican cuts.”  “The big ugly bill results in $1.1 Trillion gutted from Medicaid, the largest cuts in the history of Medicaid,” said Rep. Jim Costa. “All to give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans. It makes no sense, their priorities are out of whack. It will strip 17 million Americans of their health coverage.” You can watch the event here, and view the post-event release here.

NEW HAMPSHIRE

Wednesday, September 24 – ePTC Event with U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Health Care Advocates: U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), author of a bill to permanently extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enhanced premium tax credits, met with New Hampshire small business owners to hear firsthand how these credits help them provide health coverage for employees—and what the impact would be if Congress fails to act before they expire at the end of the year. “What they all said was that this is the way that they can provide affordable health care for themselves and for their employees,” said Senator Shaheen. “The people who will be most affected if the tax credits expire are small business owners, people who live in rural areas, working families and older Americans.”

Wednesday, September 24 – ePTC and Health Care Emergency Roundtable with Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander: Protect Our Care New Hampshire supported a roundtable discussion with Congresswoman Maggie Goodlander, advocates, and impacted constituents at Lamprey Health Center. During the event, speakers discussed Republicans’ ongoing brutal and relentless attack on New Hampshire’s community health centers and how gutting health care funding is raising already sky-high costs and forcing hardworking Americans to make impossible choices that no person should have to make.

NEW YORK

Thursday, September 25 – ePTC Accountability Event with Congressmembers Dan Goldman and George Latimer: Congressmen Dan Goldman (NY-10) and George Latimer (NY-16) joined Protect Our Care New York and advocates from across the state to discuss the urgent need to stop the GOP from letting enhanced premium tax credits expire. “Every New Yorker deserves affordable, quality health care,” said Congressman Dan Goldman. “These tax credits are a lifeline for families in my district and across the state, ensuring they don’t have to choose between paying for health care and putting food on the table. Republicans’ attacks on these benefits are cruel and shortsighted, and I will fight to make sure we protect this vital support for working families.” “For thousands of New Yorkers, the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits mean access to affordable coverage that keeps their families healthy and financially secure,” said Congressman George Latimer. “Stripping these away would be devastating, not just for 10,000 people in our district, but to the health of our entire community. We must keep these credits in place to safeguard the progress we’ve made, save families money, and to keep health care within reach for everyone.” You can watch the event here, and view the post-event release here.

NORTH CAROLINA

Thursday, September 25 – ePTC and Medicaid Roundtable with Congresswoman Deborah Ross and Health Care Advocates: Protect Our Care North Carolina provided support for a roundtable with Congresswoman Ross discussing the urgent need for Congress to protect Enhanced Premium Tax Credits and stop cuts to Medicaid. “The Senate had more senators vote to extend the tax credit and protect Medicaid than to let the costs go into effect,” said Congresswoman Ross. “If they hear from their constituents, from the providers about how big a deal this is for people’s individual health insurance, how the tax cuts for billionaires are trickling down to take away health care from everyday Americans — now is our time to let people know what’s really going on.”

PENNSYLVANIA

Tuesday, September 24 – ePTC Event with Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, Pennsylvania Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys, and Health Care Advocates: Lt. Governor Austin Davis, PA Insurance Commissioner Michael Humphreys, Pennie Executive Director Devon Trolley, and Antoinette Kraus from PHAN joined Protect Our Care Pennsylvania to discuss the urgent need to stop premium hikes. “One of my guiding principles is that those who are closest to the pain should be closest to the power. What we’re seeing in Washington is what happens when those who are furthest from the pain have all the power. Billionaires are demanding more and more, and working people are getting screwed, said Lt. Governor Austin Davis. “We need leaders in Washington to listen to the people who are struggling to get by, the people who will see their premiums skyrocket, and we need Congress to take action now.” You can watch the event here, and view the post-event release here.

VIRGINIA

Monday, September 22 – ePTC Event with U.S. Representatives Bobby Scott, Jennifer McClellan, Don Beyer, Suhas Subramanyam, and James Walkinshaw: U.S. Representatives Bobby Scott (VA-03), Jennifer McClellan (VA-04), Don Beyer (VA-08), Suhas Subramanyam (VA-10) and James Walkinshaw (VA-11) joined Protect Our Care Virginia to discuss the ongoing Trump-GOP health care disaster and the urgent need to stop GOP premium hikes by making Affordable Care Act enhanced Premium Tax Credits permanent. “We must stop the upcoming Republican premium hikes,” said Congressman Scott. “Without action from Congress, the enhanced Premium Tax Credits will expire at the end of this year, and the health care costs will increase for more than 326,000 Virginians. Many will face unaffordable premium increases … those that are sick will pay the higher prices. Those that are healthy might drop out, which means that the insurance pool will be sicker and they’ll have to charge higher prices.” You can watch the event here, and view the post-event release here.

Tuesday, September 23 – ePTC Accountability Rally Outside U.S. Representative Jen Kiggans’ Office in Virginia Beach: Protect Our Care Virginia joined Affordable Virginia, SEIU, and other concerned community members outside Rep. Kiggans’ Virginia Beach office in Town Center to hold Rep. Kiggans accountable for her vote to continue devastating cuts to Virginians’ healthcare. “When Rep. Kiggans said that ‘we don’t know these,’ I’m not sure who she was talking about,” said Emily Yeatts, Affordable Virginia Campaigns Director. “These aren’t a buy-one-get-one coupon, they’re the difference between a working family seeing a doctor or not. We’re already seeing the dismantling of Medicaid and how that is affecting our entire health care system, with rural hospitals being hit hardest – without these tax credits, that’s only going to get worse. Today, we’re demanding Rep. Kiggans do right by her constituents and uphold the oath she took as a nurse to do no harm. Removing these tax credits is harm defined.” You can watch the event here, and view the post-event release here.
