Deputy Director of Policy Programs

Protect Our Care, which has led the fight against efforts to repeal and sabotage our health care while working to lower costs, improve and expand coverage, and advance equity for millions of Americans, is looking to hire a Deputy Director of Policy Programs. This position will focus on health policy priorities including: (1) expansion and defense of health care coverage including ACA Marketplace plans, Medicaid/CHIP, and Medicare; (2) advancement of health equity across these portfolios and related to maternal health; and (3) implementation, defense, and expansion of prescription drug pricing provisions of the Inflation Reduction Act. 

The Deputy Director of Policy Programs will report to the Director of Policy Programs and will work closely with the senior advisor for health equity and other key departments including research, communications, digital, and legislative outreach.

Location: Remote, with flexibility to attend events in Washington, D.C. as needed

Status: Non-Exempt, Full-time

Reports to: Director of Policy Programs

Comprehensive benefits package included. Salary range is $70,000 – $100,000 per year based on experience.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct policy and advocacy-related research on a range of health policy topics
  • Draft reports, talking points, and other public-facing materials 
  • Monitor policy developments and actions in key areas, including by organizing key information and summarizing legislation, regulations and other executive actions, and court cases
  • Monitor media stories and narratives in key area
  • Help draft rapid-response products for policymakers and press reacting to news of the day
  • Help manage policy engagement with partner organizations
  • Review materials produced by Protect Our Care teams for policy accuracy
  • Participate in daily calls, meetings, and strategy sessions
  • Assist the Director of Policy Programs with projects as needed

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, and Skills

  • Fluency in health policy issues with an emphasis on one or more of the following: health disparities, maternal health, prescription drug pricing, Medicaid/CHIP, Medicare, the Affordable Care Act
  • 3+ years of work experience in a policy setting such as Capitol Hill or a state legislature, federal or state executive branch, a think tank, or a non-profit organization
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to distill complex issues
  • Excellent writing and project management skills
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize competing demands in a fast-paced, action-oriented organization
  • Commitment to social justice and equity; recognizes the role of race/ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability status, geography, and other identities in shaping health disparities; is driven to improve conditions

Comprehensive benefits package that includes 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plans and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
