DEVELOPMENT WRITER
REMOTE/FULL TIME
Protect Our Care is hiring an experienced Development Writer specializing in multiformat fundraising content development to help sustain and expand our mission to expand access to affordable, high-quality health care coverage and services in the U.S. This is a unique opportunity to apply writing and communication skills to a pressing and consequential issue impacting millions of individuals, families, health care providers, and local economies across the country.
The Development Writer will be responsible for researching and developing clear, persuasive, and strategic fundraising material, including proposals and reports but also visually dynamic short-form content. This position will draft original content and edit contributions from program and Development Team staff, applying a thoughtful approach and impeccable polish to presenting Protect Our Care’s priorities and impact. The successful candidate will have exceptional writing, editing, content translation, and storytelling skills, with a portfolio that demonstrates versatility across formats and audiences.
This position will collaborate within our Development Team to align funding opportunities with organizational priorities and ensure timely, high quality output. Strong communication skills, acute attention to detail, and familiarity with 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 fundraising requirements, best practices, and trends are important for success in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate closely with Development Team, program staff, and organizational leadership to produce well-structured and persuasive fundraising material across multiple written and visually dynamic formats
- Write and edit high-quality grant proposals, informational handouts, fundraising pitch materials, acknowledgements, and reports
- Translate dense or policy-heavy information into multiple accessible, engaging written and visual formats that support readability and comprehension for diverse audiences
- Work cross-functionally within Protect Our Care to gather relevant data, framing, impact stories, and other content to inform funder materials
- Manage and execute multiple, detailed tasks at a high level of fidelity, completeness, and polish within required timelines
- Maintain working knowledge of Protect Our Care’s history, current campaigns, and organizational priorities to inform messaging and proposal development
- Develop and maintain consistent brand voice and tone across multiple projects and platforms, with an ability to translate Protect Our Care’s work and appeal to audiences with interest in specialized topics and impact as needed
- Present concept ideas and drafts to internal teams and clients, incorporating feedback effectively
- Monitor external trends in fundraising, storytelling, and audience engagement to inform and elevate the Development Team’s work
- Ensure all processes are in place to execute the team’s work including maintenance of up-to-date, accurate records for donors and prospects
- Assist with other fundraising and donor stewardship projects as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- 5+ years professional experience including at least 3 years nonprofit or political advocacy grant writing, ideally connected to health care, democracy, and/or public policy work
- Strong written communication and information translation skills, with the ability to draft, edit, and adapt content to multiple formats ranging from full reports to short-form handouts to slide decks incorporating written, infographic, and other content to support different audiences and purposes. Excellent proofreading and content organization skills. Note: Candidates will be evaluated on their abilities to deliver in these areas without reliance on generative artificial intelligence tools; material deemed to be overly reliant on resources such as ChatGPT will not be competitive.
- Ability to follow established processes, manage deadlines and organize work, learn from and apply feedback, and maintain consistent, accurate documentation without substantial oversight, with an interest in contributing to process improvement
- Strategic thinking to understand the organization’s priorities and context and apply this knowledge to develop strong and competitive fundraising material
- Able to take and execute both high-level and detailed direction, understand competing priorities and challenges, and draw on experience and creativity to propose solutions for team input
- Intellectual curiosity, high emotional intelligence, and ability to apply a collaborative, team-oriented mindset to remote work
- Knowledge of 501(c)3 and 501(c)4 designations and compliance considerations within a fundraising context; experience with other entities a plus
- Proficiency in Google Workspace and ability to leverage graphic design platforms (such as Canva or Figma) to augment written material
- Familiarity with project and grants management software (Asana or similar)
- Experience managing sensitive information and donor interactions with professionalism and confidentiality
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with graphic design
- Experience with grant budget development
- Familiarity and relationships with funders or donor advisors within Protect Our Care’s fields of work
The position is permanently and fully remote and the salary range is $70,000 to $85,000. This position is considered non-exempt for overtime purposes.

Employees are able to enroll in 401k retirement plans and are eligible for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401k contributions. Employees are also eligible for pre-tax transportation benefits. Employees will receive 120 hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 2 days of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually. Employees will also receive 13 paid holidays throughout the calendar year. Employees are eligible for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.
