From California to Maine, hospitals and clinics are closing their doors, and entire departments are disappearing after Donald Trump and Republicans cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Seniors, people with disabilities, expectant mothers, and cancer patients are facing higher health care costs, traveling further to get care, and enduring longer wait times in overwhelmed emergency rooms. As care centers and nursing homes close, people will lose jobs, local and state economies will suffer, and entire communities will be left without access to care, all so Trump and Republicans could give more tax breaks to the rich. Read more about the disaster the GOP budget bill has created for rural hospitals here.

Over the summer, Republicans couldn’t escape the heat of their constituents. Everywhere they went, people were furious about the largest cuts to health care in history, booing their representatives out of town halls and other events. Upon their return to Washington, D.C., there won’t be any respite for Republicans. Yesterday, Protect Our Care launched Accountability Autumn: The Trump-GOP Health Care Disaster to continue to hold them accountable for breaking our health care system.

Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) recently joined Protect Our Care to relaunch Hospital Crisis Watch, shining a light on the harm Donald Trump and Republicans’ spending bill is inflicting on American health care. Hospitals are struggling, care is vanishing, and the American people deserve to know who’s responsible.
