Protect Our Care’s Hospital Crisis Watch Map Now Tracks 600 Providers at Risk or Closing in the Wake of GOP Health Care Cuts

Washington, D.C. — Protect Our Care’s Hospital Crisis Watch has reached yet another stark milestone: 600 hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes have closed or are at risk of closing because Republicans made the largest cuts to health care in history to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Protect Our Care will continue to track closures in real time, highlighting the urgent need to protect access to care for every American.

When a hospital, clinic, or ward shuts its doors, families lose access to life-saving care, patients must travel farther for treatment, and communities face impossible choices between receiving care and affording basic necessities. Jobs disappear, local economies weaken, and public health programs suffer. Each closure hits real people, eroding the safety net that keeps communities healthy and resilient. “Donald Trump and Republicans have decided that closing 600 health centers across this country is the price they’re willing to pay so the rich can get richer,” said Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT). “This comes as a direct result of kicking 15 million people off Medicaid, and to make matters worse, Republicans are doubling down and refusing to work with Democrats to prevent insurance premiums from doubling or even tripling for millions of Americans covered by the Affordable Care Act. These premium increases will force families to make impossible choices and many people will give up their health insurance because they can’t afford it — a reality that will have a devastating ripple effect on our entire health care system. Democrats will continue fighting to prevent Trump and Republicans from pushing millions of American families off a health care cliff just so they can give billionaires and corporations another massive tax break.”

“These aren’t just numbers,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “Each closure or at-risk provider represents devastating consequences for real people — communities scrambling for care, patients delaying treatment because the nearest hospital is hours away, and families facing impossible choices. The GOP health care cuts are forcing these closures and putting billionaires ahead of everyday Americans. Every hospital that shuts its doors is a reminder of how Republicans continue to wage a war on American health care at the expense of hard-working families.”

Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans have launched an all-out assault on the American health care system since taking office. They cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to fund massive tax breaks for the ultra-wealthy. They’re raising health care costs for over 24 million Americans, more than doubling the premiums of hard-working people. Despite the American people rejecting the Republican agenda, the GOP continues to double down on their crusade to make health care and life unaffordable for millions.
