Washington, D.C. – Today, President Trump and Congressional Republicans once again refused Democrats’ good faith efforts to find a budget that meets the needs of the American people by ending the health care crisis they created. Republicans are so fixated on raising costs for the millions of Americans who buy their own health insurance and slashing Medicaid to the bone that they’re hurtling Washington toward a government shutdown.
Senate Republican Leader John Thune called Democrats ‘hostage takers’ for advocating a budget that helps everyday people afford health care. But the GOP are the real hostage takers here – using working families as political pawns in their efforts to destroy American health care to fund tax breaks for billionaires. Republicans have full power over the federal government. It is up to them whether hard-working families continue to suffer under skyrocketing premiums as they lose critical coverage.
“President Trump and Republicans in Congress’ refusal to create a budget that helps working families afford health care is just the latest example of their failure to govern,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “They have shown time and again that they’re willing to throw hard-working families under the bus to carve out tax breaks for the ultra-rich. When the government shuts down on Wednesday, the blame will fall squarely on the GOP and their refusal to address a health care crisis of their own making.”
