Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), a steadfast advocate for affordable health care, announced her candidacy for Minnesota Governor.
“Senator Amy Klobuchar is the definition of a health care champion,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “We will sorely miss her fighting spirit here in Washington. During her nearly two decades representing Minnesotans in Congress, Senator Klobuchar has been a fierce advocate for the affordable, reliable health care every American deserves. Her dogged commitment to bringing down prices and improving care across the country has made a difference in the lives of millions of seniors and working families. I know she will continue standing up for the right of every Minnesotan to afford lifesaving medications, age with dignity, and see a doctor when they need one.”
Senator Klobuchar Has a Lengthy Track Record as a Health Care Champion:
- Senator Klobuchar Was a Key Vote to Pass the Affordable Care Act. In 2009, Senator Klobuchar was a key vote and a strong advocate for passing the Affordable Care Act. Because of the ACA, nearly 50 million Americans have gained health coverage they can afford and more than 100 million Americans with pre-existing conditions are protected from being denied coverage or charged more for care. In 2017, she played a pivotal role in defeating Donald Trump’s efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
- Senator Klobuchar Helped Pass the Inflation Reduction Act, Lowering Costs for Millions of Americans. Senator Klobuchar was also a key vote for the Inflation Reduction Act, the most important health care legislation since the ACA. The Inflation Reduction Act is bringing down prescription drug costs for seniors and lowered health care premiums for millions of people who buy insurance on their own. Senator Klobuchar is still working hard to extend the improved premium tax credits so that families can continue to have access to affordable, quality health insurance.
- Senator Klobuchar Is a Tireless Advocate for Lowering Drug Costs. Senator Klobuchar has been fighting throughout her career to lower prescription drug prices. She was a key advocate for provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act that are lowering drug prices and lifted the 20-year ban that kept Medicare from negotiating lower prices directly with drug companies. Senator Klobuchar is now leading the fight to lower health care costs even more for seniors and their families by expanding Medicare drug price negotiations.
