Washington, D.C. – Today, Donald Trump told Republicans in Congress not to “waste” time restoring the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that over 21 million Americans rely on to pay for health insurance. Trump joins key GOP members of Congress in making clear their intention to permanently rip away the tax credits and hike premium costs for Americans —  all so they can continue giving tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.

When Republicans in Congress ripped away health care tax credits this year, they doubled and tripled health insurance premiums for hard-working American families. Now, despite hearing a resounding rebuke from American voters in the November 4th bellwether elections, they’re eagerly embracing Trump’s demands and continuing their war on American health care. By creating this crisis, Trump and the GOP are setting themselves up for a massive defeat next November.

“Trump has made it crystal clear that he doesn’t give a damn about everyday people,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “Republicans in Congress have abandoned any effort to restore the tax credits that millions of Americans rely on. Three out of four Americans support the tax credits, but Republicans are hell-bent on ripping them away and instead are locking in massive premium increases, which will price millions out of coverage altogether.

“Instead of restoring the health care credits, which resulted in the lowest rate of uninsured Americans in our nation’s history, Trump and Republicans are embarking on a partisan plan that will provide more tax breaks to billionaires and will force millions of working Americans into junk insurance plans, end protections for pre-existing conditions, and leave people exposed to massive costs in the event of illness or hospitalization.”
