Washington, D.C. – In the first major election since Republicans more than doubled health care premiums for millions of Americans and slashed $1 trillion from Medicaid to fund tax breaks for the wealthy, Virginia and New Jersey voters, and voters across the country, rendered a clear verdict: they’ve had enough of the Trump-GOP war on American health care. In the midst of a Republican government shutdown designed to spike health care premiums for hard-working families, voters overwhelmingly chose to elect Democrats fighting to protect health care for everyday people.
“The message out of Virginia and New Jersey and across America is as clear as a bell: voters want nothing to do with the Trump-GOP war on American health care,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “Health care was in the first line of Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill’s affordability plans because it’s top of mind for families, and voters want leaders who will lower health care costs – not those who would rather give tax breaks to billionaires. Republicans in Washington should wake up, end the government shutdown, and restore permanently the tax credits that help people afford health care — or tonight’s rebuke will just be an appetizer for what Republicans are in for in 2026.”
Republicans now face a choice. Will they end their government shutdown and permanently restore the health care tax credits the vast majority of Americans support? Or will they risk working people’s lives and livelihoods by continuing to insist that tax breaks for billionaires are more important than keeping health care premiums affordable for nearly 25 million Americans?
