Washington, D.C. – Today, Rep. Mike Lawler publicly embarrassed himself by trying to spread GOP health care lies in a staged on-camera confrontation with Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House, and are using their power to keep the government shut down while more than doubling health insurance premiums for millions of hard-working Americans. This summer, voters watched Republicans like Lawler carve out massive tax breaks for billionaires while slashing Medicaid and taking away tax credits that help middle-class families afford their health care. Now, they’ve seen Republicans flee Washington and shut down the government, leaving them to fend for themselves as their monthly insurance premiums climb by hundreds or thousands of dollars. No amount of GOP bluster can obscure these facts from the American people.

“Mike Lawler is a fraud and an opponent of American health care. During his performative outburst, he failed to mention his vote to ransack Medicaid and fund tax breaks to billionaires. He failed to mention that he voted to kick millions off of coverage and close rural hospitals. And he failed to mention that he supported the very bill that eliminated the tax credits millions of hardworking New Yorkers rely on. He’s cosplaying a tough guy in the halls of Congress today, but when his constituents needed him to help working families afford health insurance, he and his Republican buddies fled town. Hakeem Jeffries is right. Mike Lawler is an embarrassment.”
