Washington, D.C. – This week, the millions of hard-working Californians, Mainers, Minnesotans, Vermonters, Oregonians, and Kentuckians who buy health insurance on their own through the Affordable Care Act are experiencing the Republican health care betrayal firsthand as they preview their health insurance premiums for 2026 through their state’s online window shopping portals. They, along with over 20 million people across the country, face massive health insurance premium increases for next year because Donald Trump and Republicans cut health care to fund tax breaks for billionaires and shut down the government to rip away tax credits for working people.
“There is no longer any doubt about the health care disaster Republicans have created,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “Working families can now log onto a computer and see the Republican health care betrayal right before their eyes. Premiums are skyrocketing for everyday people who just want to be able to see a doctor without draining their life savings, all because Donald Trump and his Republican minions in Congress prioritized tax breaks for billionaires over health care for everyday people.”
Background
Americans don’t have to guess how much the GOP’s health care chaos is costing them. On October 15, California, Maine, Minnesota, Vermont, Oregon, and Kentucky ACA health insurance marketplaces launched online window shopping tools where hard-working families can compare their monthly premiums for next year with and without the health care tax credits that Republicans shut down the government to end.
The GOP price hikes are shocking:
California
In Mission Viejo, California, in Congresswoman Young Kim’s district, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $1,671.68 more per month in 2026, more than four times their premium for a very similar plan this year.
Maine
In Bar Harbor, Maine, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $2,550.56 more per month in 2026, more than triple their premium for a very similar plan this year.
Oregon
In Medford, Oregon, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $2,021.98 more per month in 2026, more than four times their premium for a very similar plan this year.
Vermont
In Burlington, Vermont, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $1,974.84 more per month in 2026, more than four times their premium for the same plan this year.
Kentucky
In Clay County, Kentucky, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $2,176.68 more per month in 2026, more than five times their premium for the same plan this year.
Minnesota
In St. Paul, Minnesota, premiums for a 60-year-old couple making $85,000 will cost $1,308.90 more per month in 2026, more than triple their premium for a nearly identical plan this year.
