PhRMA Spent $29.6 Million on Lobbying in 2021 as Democrats Worked to Pass Build Back Better Act

Washington, DC — Yesterday, federal disclosures revealed that the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) spent nearly $29.6 million on lobbying in 2021 – an all time record. In response, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:

“Last year’s record lobbying spending from Big Pharma only confirms that drug companies will stop at nothing to protect their profits and keep prices high for patients.  Let’s be clear: drug companies would rather gauge patients and pad their profits than do the right thing. PhRMA and their Republican allies object to the most common sense measures to reduce drug prices: giving Medicare the power to negotiate, limiting insulin prices for diabetics, capping out-of-pocket drug costs for seniors, and banning excessive price hikes on existing drugs. These corporate lobbyists know that their grip on power is waning as President Biden and Democrats in Congress are committed to delivering relief to the American people. This display of outright greed only confirms the urgent need to pass the Build Back Better’s measures to lower prescription drug prices once and for all.”
