Protect Our Care’s Hospital Crisis Watch Map Now Shows Over 750 Health Care Providers at Risk of Closing Due to the GOP Health Care Crisis

Washington, D.C. — Protect Our Care’s Hospital Crisis Watch has hit another dark milestone: over 750 hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other critical providers have closed, are at risk of closing, or have cut essential services because Trump and Republicans gutted Medicaid to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. This somber announcement comes after Trump tried to gaslight Americans on his dismal record during the State of the Union address.

But his grandstanding can’t distract from reality. Across the nation, costs are skyrocketing. Expectant mothers are being thrust into maternity care deserts, forcing them to travel longer for life-saving care. Rural families suffer as hospital closures shrink local economies and drive jobs to disappear. Communities’ public health is deteriorating, leading to spikes in deadly and preventable diseases.

“The closure of hundreds of hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes is shameful, but it’s exactly what Trump and Republicans knew would happen when they passed the biggest Medicaid cut in our country’s history to fund a massive tax giveaway for billionaires and corporations,” said Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT). “Trump has no plan to fix this crisis – all he has are empty promises and vague plans that will do nothing to help the millions of people who lost access to health care or saw their premiums double.”

“No amount of Trump’s grandstanding, showboating, and gaslighting can erase what every American knows is true,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “Ever since he and Republicans passed their Big, Ugly Bill, a tidal wave of provider closures has rippled throughout the nation. Maternity wards are disappearing out of sight. Nursing homes are walking on eggshells. And hospitals are shutting their doors. But the fallout of ransacking Medicaid to the tune of $1 trillion to enrich billionaires extends far beyond provider closures. Every time one disappears, families lose access to lifesaving care, rural economies start hemorrhaging jobs, and Americans’ lives are put in jeopardy.”
