The Pressure Is On Rep. Dan Newhouse to Protect The 1,779,850 Washingtonians on Medicaid and Reject House Republicans’ Scheme to Make Health Care Cuts to Fund Tax Breaks for the Wealthy

Tomorrow, Republicans in the House Energy and Commerce and Ways and Means Committees will attempt to pass legislation that will raise health care costs and rip away coverage from millions so Trump and the GOP can fund tax breaks for the wealthy and big corporations. Last night, Republicans on the House Energy and Commerce Committee released their budget proposal, revealing their devastating plan to make the largest Medicaid cuts in history and kick millions off their coverage. Their proposal would raise costs on low-income families, shutter rural hospitals, and impose burdensome work requirements designed to deny people coverage. Millions of Americans would lose coverage, including seniors, children, veterans, people with disabilities, workers who don’t get insurance through their jobs, and people who take care of their children or elderly parents.

In addition to draconian Medicaid cuts, Republicans are raising premiums and out-of-pocket costs for tens of millions of people who buy coverage on their own. These Republican price hikes will force middle-class families to lose their coverage altogether.

“Not a single dollar should be taken from health care to fund tax breaks for billionaires. The pressure is on Rep. Dan Newhouse to stand up and ensure his Republican colleagues’ don’t rip health care away from millions just to line the pockets of their billionaire friends and donors,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “House Republicans are set to make the largest cuts to Medicaid in history and hike premium costs on people who buy coverage on their own. Communities in Washington and across the country would feel the consequences of Republicans’ cruel and life-threatening scheme to gut Medicaid and the ACA. Rep. Newhouse must decide: Will he fight for the health and well-being of his constituents, or will he cave to Donald Trump and rip health care away from millions, just to give tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans and corporations?”

This Republican budget makes drastic health care cuts – cuts that will throw working families off coverage and into medical debt, take critical long-term care away from seniors and people with disabilities, and leave millions of children uninsured. Poll after poll after poll – even Trump’s own pollster – has found the majority of Americans, including 91 percent of Washington voters in the 4th district, don’t support cuts to Medicaid or Affordable Care Act plans. Rep. Newhouse has lied about his support for Medicaid cuts before, and if he doesn’t stand up now, he will be putting the interests of Donald Trump and the wealthiest Americans over his constituents.
