Protect Our Care Is Organizing Events Featuring U.S. Representatives Mark Pocan, Gwen Moore, and Valerie Foushee; WI Secretary of State Sarah Godlewski; and More As We Commemorate 60 Years of Medicare and Medicaid
As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid this Thursday, Protect Our Care is organizing events around the country to make sure every American knows Donald Trump and Washington Republicans put these vital programs in grave jeopardy by making the largest health care cuts in American history to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. They slashed more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and took away tax credits that make health care more affordable for middle-class Americans. The bill will strip health care from more than 15 million people, increase costs on middle- and low-income families, and send shockwaves through middle- and working-class families trying to make ends meet, all so billionaires and big companies could get another tax break. Hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics around the country will be forced to cut services and close their doors altogether. As entire communities are cut off from care, people will have to travel further, raising costs at nearby facilities and driving up E.R. wait times. Expectant moms and people with serious illnesses will lose access to care, while people lose jobs and key economic drivers are crushed by this Republican bill.
Six in 10 Americans disapprove of the GOP’s megabill and think that it will raise their health care costs, and a majority think it will do more to help the wealthy while harming middle- and low-income people. Medicaid is overwhelmingly popular across party lines: 78 percent of Americans are favorable towards Medicaid, or 88 percent of Democrats, 70 percent of Republicans, and 67 percent of independents. But instead of keeping their promises to lower costs or protect middle-class families, Donald Trump and the Republicans have slashed Medicaid and are raising costs and ripping care from everyday Americans so they can give tax breaks to the ultrarich.
