While Democrats were on Capitol Hill fighting to protect working families’ health care yesterday, Republicans were nowhere to be found. They fled Washington and shut down the government so they could rip away tax relief for working families struggling to pay for health insurance premiums. The dismal state of American health care today and the skyrocketing premiums families face are a direct result of GOP policy—taking $1 trillion from Medicaid to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy, hiking premiums and prescription drugs costs, and shutting down nursing homes and rural hospitals.

The American people see the GOP health care failure every time they sit in an overcrowded hospital waiting room, receive a premium increase letter from their insurance company, or have to drive hours to receive life-saving care at the nearest hospital. Americans won’t soon forget that Republicans put billionaires over health care for working people.
