Washington, D.C. — After Protect Our Care brought the fight over health care to communities across North Carolina, Donald Trump and JD Vance are scrambling to win back voters ahead of the midterms with last-ditch rallies in the Tar Heel State. But nothing can erase the damage that their health care record has imposed on North Carolinians. While Trump, Vance, and Republicans try to change the subject, North Carolina families are stuck dealing with rising premiums, lost coverage, and the fallout from GOP health care cuts.
After Republicans gutted Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations last year, an estimated 234,453 North Carolinians have already lost Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage. Families who relied on the tax credits Republicans ripped away have been slammed with estimated average premium increases of 149% this year alone. North Carolina hospitals are projected to lose $35.4 billion over the next decade, putting even more pressure on a health care system already stretched thin. Now, 23 health care facilities in North Carolina have been forced to shut down, cut services, or are at risk of doing so following the GOP health care cuts. “Trump and Vance are hoping a few rallies and political stunts will distract North Carolinians from the damage they’ve done, but a campaign rally won’t lower anyone’s premiums, restore coverage to families who have lost it, or keep a struggling hospital open,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “Make no mistake, this is a health care election and North Carolinians know exactly who is responsible for this mess. With just weeks left until voters head to the polls, Trump is pulling out all the stops, from flashy rallies to desperate bribes. But the fallout from his health care cuts isn’t going anywhere. Families across North Carolina are stretching their medications, skipping checkups, and crossing their fingers that nobody in the family gets sick enough to send them spiraling into debt. So Trump can put on his little show all he wants, but eventually the stage lights will go out, the cameras will leave, and North Carolinians will still be stuck paying the price.”
When Care Force One rolled through North Carolina, State Reps. Dante Pittman and Lindsey Prather joined health care professionals and local storytellers to sound the alarm on the health care crisis unleashed by the GOP, share their struggles, and lay out a plan to rebuild health care once Democrats regain control this November.
