Since Tuesday night, when a blue tidal wave swept over the nation and brought Democrats to a resounding victory in the midterms, the fight for affordable health care has taken off in a sprint. After groundbreaking Democratic victories in the races for governor in Texas and Georgia, Medicaid expansion is back on the table despite GOP attempts to eviscerate funding. Already, health champions governors-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms of Georgia and Gina Hinojosa of Texas have vowed to pursue expansion, and several other states, like Wisconsin and Kansas, are poised to follow suit.
In Texas alone, this would mean an estimated 1.1 million people would be eligible for Medicaid, including 605,000 people who would otherwise have no path to coverage. As conversations around Medicaid expansion continue to gain steam across the country, millions of Americans could soon have a new path to affordable health care coverage. The blue wave didn’t stop at the ballot box. Instead, it’s carrying new momentum for Medicaid expansion straight into statehouses across the country.
