Washington D.C. – As the Trump White House considers an obscene $200 billion budget request for the wildly unpopular Iran war, Roll Call reports the administration is preparing to ask Congress to gut funding for the National Institutes of Health by 20 percent in the Trump fiscal 2027 budget, putting at risk  thousands of research grants aimed at finding treatments and cures for cancer, Alzheimer’s, infectious diseases and many other illnesses. In response, Protect Our Care said the scheme amounted to shooting the economy in the foot as NIH grants for medical research have been credited with delivering a more than 2.5-to-1 return on taxpayer investment, generating $94.58 billion in new economic activity in FY2024.

Brad Woodhouse, President of Protect Our Care: “Donald Trump and his creepy pet project OMB Director want to rob NIH of life-saving resources to help pay for endless war and tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. These cuts won’t actually save a nickel because it will end up costing working people more than double that in lost economic activity. And the potential cost to our public health in lost scientific research and innovation is incalculable. But it’s not surprising as the Trump administration loves to cut off their nose to spite their face in pursuit of their anti-science agenda.”
