The ramifications of the GOP gutting $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations are playing out everywhere. In Iowa, 34 frontline health care workers are being laid off. In Indiana, 48 health care workers are being let go, and a maternity ward is shuttering, putting mothers’ and newborns’ lives in jeopardy. In Pennsylvania, the GOP’s wealth transfer has put up to 14 hospitals at risk of closing their doors. Nationwide, more than 700 hospitals, maternity wards, nursing homes, and other critical providers are at risk of cutting services or shutting down altogether. Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Representative Frank Pallone, Jr. (D-NJ) have released a new report exposing the Big, Ugly Bill’s devastating harm to hospitals, patients, and health care workers.
If Trump and congressional Republicans are blind to the political albatross they’ve created, they’ll find out soon enough. At the ballot box in November, parents won’t forget seeing their maternity wards disappearing; frontline health care workers won’t forget being thrown to the curb; and rural Americans won’t forget their clinics vanishing — all because the GOP put billionaire giveaways over working Americans’ lives.
