One year ago, President Trump and congressional Republicans took an axe to the health care system, gutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Since then, 8 million people — and counting — have lost the coverage they relied on to see a doctor, premiums and out-of-pocket costs have doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled and over 1,000 hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, and other critical providers are closing, cutting essential services, or are at risk of cuts or closure. In Trump’s America, expectant moms are facing maternal care deserts, seniors are losing access to long-term care, and people with disabilities are facing devastating disruptions in critical services.

The fallout of the GOP’s war on health care is playing out nationwide. In Michigan, the closure of another rural hospital is pushing patients farther from care and devastating an already strained health care system. Expectant mothers in Arkansas are travelling up to 84 minutes to give birth, risking complications. Hospitals in Alabama are being overwhelmed by an influx of uninsured patients. Behind every closure, layoff or service cut, a community pays the price for Trump and congressional Republicans’ choice to put tax breaks for billionaires ahead of working families.
