Protect Our Care’s New Report Finds 800+ Providers Nationwide Face Closure and Cuts in the Wake of Republicans Gutting Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA)
The American health care system is on life support after Trump and Republicans ransacked $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Now, over 800 hospitals, nursing homes, maternity wards, and other critical providers nationwide are shuttering, at risk of shuttering, or cutting essential services, and the human toll is quickly mounting. April marks the 9th Medicaid Awareness Month, and Protect Our Care’s new report details how every hospital that closes its doors puts patients’ lives at risk and strips communities of vital care.
Rural mothers like Deanna from Georgia are reeling after Republican Medicaid cuts closed her local labor and delivery unit, forcing her to travel 45 minutes to an hour and a half for life-saving maternal care. Dialysis patients like Jodie from New York are angry after Republican Medicaid cuts put “her life on the line,” shuttering her local clinic and forcing her to make a 30-minute drive three times a week for the treatment she needs to survive. Doctors like Dr. Winkelman from Minnesota took to the airwaves to sound the alarm on the looming “public health crisis” of Republican Medicaid cuts imperiling Hennepin County Medical Center — forcing cuts to 100 beds that Minnesotans rely on when they get sick and layoffs of 100 employees.
At the ballot box in November, voters won’t forget those responsible for gutting Medicaid and throwing into jeopardy the health care system that working families depend on — all so the rich can get richer.
