One year after Trump and Republicans in Congress axed working families’ health care to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, over 1,100 hospitals, clinics, and essential service providers have closed, faced cuts, or are at risk of doing so. From coast to coast, hospitals are bracing for financial trouble, as more patients become uninsured thanks to the GOP’s sabotage agenda, including imposing restrictive work requirements and taking away premium tax credits. Already, hospitals and community clinics in Georgia, Louisiana, and Massachusetts are laying off staff in anticipation of the fallout. Rural hospitals especially are feeling the financial pressure, as federal funding cuts make operating increasingly untenable. In fact, recent reporting revealed that in Oklahoma alone 45 rural hospitals are at risk of closing.
When a community loses its local hospital, it can mean the difference between life and death. When an expectant mother has to travel farther for maternity care, when specialized services disappear overnight, when a patient faces longer wait times, lives are put at risk. As this crisis deepens, working families will be the ones paying the price for Republicans’ billionaire tax breaks. Come November, voters won’t forget who put billionaires ahead of working families, and they will make their voices heard.
