Washington D.C. — As Americans are facing the fallout of Republican health care cuts, the Trump administration is working on new plans to make the crisis even worse. After slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, the Trump administration is working behind the scenes to deepen cuts by limiting two of the main ways that states fund Medicaid: provider taxes and state-directed payments. In total, this could result in hundreds of billions in additional federal cuts to Medicaid. As the fallout multiplies exponentially, his rules could make things even worse for working families by going beyond the law and causing hospitals to lose as much as an additional $680 billion.
In response, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:
“The health care sabotage under Donald Trump never ends. Our nation’s hospitals are in shambles, millions of people are losing access to care, and costs are skyrocketing across the board. As states are scrambling to mitigate the damage of the GOP health care cuts, Trump is only throwing gasoline on the fire. The American people are absolutely sick of having their health care gutted to fund tax breaks for billionaires, and there will be hell to pay when voters finally get a chance to make their voices heard in November.”
BY THE NUMBERS
After Trump signed into law the largest cuts to health care in history in order to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and corporations, millions of people have already lost Medicaid/CHIP coverage; over 1,200 hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes are closing, cutting essential services, or are at risk; and families are being hit with skyrocketing premiums, higher out-of-pocket costs, and fewer choices for care. Now, President Trump is proposing:
- Going beyond the law to gut an additional $361 billion in federal Medicaid funding by deepening cuts to provider payments.
- Exacerbating a health care crisis that has already left over 1,200 hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics facing cuts or closure and cut off entire communities from care.
- Further limiting dozens of states’ ability to preserve access to care and quality in the midst of unprecedented attacks on health care.
- Gutting an additional $54 billion from Medicaid by hobbling states’ ability to finance their share of Medicaid spending and protect health care for working families.
- Ripping a total additional $681 billion in critical funding from hospitals by deepening these cuts.
- Undermining the funding behind state-level tax credits that lowered premiums for countless families after the GOP ripped away federal health care tax credits.
- Threatening the funding that supports state public health programs at a time RFK Jr. and DOGE have left our country more vulnerable to preventable disease.
