Secretary Pete Buttigieg and health care advocate, cancer survivor, and small business owner Victoria Sylvester joined Protect Our Care Senior Advisor Anne Shoup for an in-depth fireside chat in Traverse City, Michigan. Protect Our Care is traveling across the nation, shining the light on the health care crisis that Trump and congressional Republicans orchestrated to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. They gutted $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and ripped away the tax credits that over 22 million Americans relied on to see a doctor when they’re sick. As a result, over 800 hospitals, nursing homes, maternity wards, and other critical providers are shuttering, cutting essential services families rely on, or are at risk of both, while millions are facing impossible decisions just to make ends meet.
To mark their interview, Protect Our Care Senior Advisor Anne Shoup released the following statement:
“Like Victoria, millions of Americans are being forced to play ‘Russian roulette’ with their lives, foregoing the care that keeps them alive and healthy in order to keep a roof over their heads and put food on the table. This affordability nightmare didn’t just appear out of thin air. It is a direct result of Trump and congressional Republicans making devastating health care cuts to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Republicans ransacked the lifeline that seniors relied on for dignified aging care and ripped away the help working families depended on for insulin pumps and doctor checkups, all to make the rich richer.
“Republicans knew the human toll that would ensue from their scheme, but they did it anyway. Our fireside chat with Victoria and Pete spotlights the gut-wrenching reality that millions of Americans trapped in the GOP health care crisis are living. Voters won’t forget who is responsible for this planned misery, and Trump and Republicans will face their wrath at the ballot box in November.”
