As Republicans head home for the holidays, they are leaving behind a firestorm of outrage from the American people and a cascade of scathing headlines across the nation and in 45 states plus Washington, D.C., condemning them for a self-inflicted premium disaster that will hit families with hundreds and even thousands of dollars in new health care costs on January 1. By voting to end the Affordable Care Act’s premium tax credits and then walking away, Republicans have knowingly triggered a health care crisis that will drive costs through the roof, rip coverage away from millions, and force families into impossible choices between care and basics like rent, groceries, and electricity. Even with a clear opportunity to spare working people from these GOP-engineered price hikes, Republicans chose to pack their bags and protect tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations instead. With just over two weeks until January, working families from the frigid Alaskan mountains to the sweltering Florida beaches are being left to absorb a health care cost explosion—while Republicans flee Washington and ignore the anger they’ve unleashed.
