Working families are reeling from Donald Trump and congressional Republicans doubling, tripling, and quadrupling their health premiums to bankroll massive tax giveaways to billionaires and big corporations. As a result, once-unthinkable choices are now a grim reality across the nation. Teachers, like Kate from Arizona, are grappling with premiums that have skyrocketed, forcing her and her husband to downgrade to a bare-bones, high-deductible plan just to stay insured. Kate prays they won’t have an accident, because if they do, they could be thrown into crippling medical debt. Small business owners, like Hulsman from Kentucky, are being crushed by the GOP’s premium hikes and forced to drop once-affordable plans for riskier, high-deductible bronze coverage. Hulsman, like Kate, hopes a medical emergency doesn’t land him in dire financial straits, forcing him to close down the skate shop he built with blood, sweat, and tears.
While health care is Americans’ top affordability concern, Trump and Senate Republicans continue to stonewall a House-passed extension of the Affordable Care Act tax credits — the only viable, popular, and bipartisan solution to end these devastating premium hikes. As more Americans are forced to downgrade coverage or drop it altogether, voters won’t forget at the ballot box in November that it was Republicans who knowingly forced these impossible choices on them — all so the GOP’s billionaire donors could cash in on their misery and pain.
