Premiums are skyrocketing, coverage is disappearing, and working families are making impossible choices just to make ends meet. Last year, Donald Trump and Republicans slashed more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Since then, nearly 3 million Americans have already been forced off their ACA coverage this year alone, as the cost of staying covered continues to climb. From Rhode Island and Maryland to Pennsylvania and Colorado, families are staring down another year of double-digit premium hikes. In Georgia, one family watched their monthly premium explode from $226 to a staggering $2,716. Now, millions of Americans are being left to fend for themselves, scrambling for cheaper ways to afford their lifesaving medication. Patients are rationing what they have, going without prescriptions, or turning to cheaper alternatives. In Florida, ACA enrollee Kara Windeler’s had to make an extraordinary sacrifice to afford her health care: she sold her home. Now, as she faces another premium increase, she worries about how she’ll continue affording her doctors and treatments. “We need something that we can afford,” she said.

And the health care affordability crisis does not only affect those who purchase coverage on the ACA Marketplace. Teachers across the country are getting hit with steep premium increases, some reaching upwards of 34%, while small businesses struggle to keep their employees covered. Working class Americans are watching their health care costs climb while Trump’s billionaire friends get another round of tax breaks – and they’re sick of it.
