While Republicans Hike Costs and Rip Away Coverage in Washington, Spanberger Delivers Critical Care to Moms
Washington, D.C. – Yesterday, Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger signed the Momnibus into law, a package of bills to improve health care coverage for mothers and babies, especially those of color.
The United States is in the middle of a maternal health crisis, with the highest rate of maternal deaths among high-income nations. While this crisis affects women across the country, Black women face especially alarming risks and are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women. Most pregnancy-related deaths are preventable with timely, high-quality care, but Donald Trump and Republicans have launched an all-out assault on American health care, gutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations.
In response, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:
“Governor Spanberger made it clear from day one that she was running to lower costs and strengthen health care for families across Virginia, and she has delivered on that promise. By signing the Momnibus into law, she is taking meaningful action to improve maternal health, close gaps in care, and ensure more moms and babies get the care they need to stay healthy. At a time when Republicans are gutting our health care and putting care further out of reach, Gov. Spanberger is expanding access, investing in communities, and putting the health of Virginia families first.”
