Washington D.C. — Last week, Protect Our Care’s “Sick of It! Fix Health Care Now” bus tour rolled into Columbus and Savannah, Georgia, to hold Donald Trump and Republicans like Mike Collins accountable for ripping away health care and saddling families with skyrocketing costs. Representative Sanford Bishop joined health care professionals and local storytellers to sound the alarm on the health care crisis unleashed by the GOP, share their struggles, and lay out a plan to rebuild health care once Democrats regain control this November.
Now, following Protect Our Care’s successful stops through Georgia, Donald Trump is trying to play defense, heading to the Peach State for a last-ditch rally to win back voters’ support ahead of the midterms. He’ll be campaigning alongside Republican Representative Mike Collins, who is fighting a losing battle in his attempt to unseat Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff for his spot in the United States Senate.
“Trump is rolling back into town acting like everything is just peachy while Georgian families are watching their health coverage slip away and their medical bills pile up,” said Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse. “Make no mistake, this is a health care election, and Donald Trump knows Republicans don’t stand a chance. With just weeks left until voters head to the polls, Trump is pulling out all the stops, from flashy rallies to desperate bribes. But he can’t hide from the damage. Families across Georgia are stretching their medications, skipping checkups, and crossing their fingers that nobody in the family gets sick enough to send them spiraling into debt. So Trump and Collins can put on their little show all they want, but eventually the stage lights will go out, the cameras will leave, and Georgians will still be stuck paying the price.”
Trump’s MAGA buddy, Mike Collins, happily voted to gut Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations last year. And since then, over 200,000 Georgians have lost their health care coverage, while families who relied on the tax credits Republicans gutted have been slammed with estimated average premium increases of 196% this year alone.
And thanks to Republicans like Collins, Georgia hospitals are projected to lose $6 billion over the next decade, putting even more pressure on a health care system already stretched thin. Since Collins’ vote, 20 hospitals and health care providers across the state have shuttered their doors, announced closure, or have been identified as at risk of doing so.
