Washington, D.C. – Today, Senator Moreno released his so-called “best and final” offer on ACA tax credits amid the Trump-GOP premium disaster. The Republican plan fails to deliver what the majority of the House, the Senate, and the American people want — a clean, three-year extension of the credits. Instead, it erodes the tax credits, makes health care more expensive for working families, undermines protections for pre-existing conditions, and chips away at the Affordable Care Act.
In response, Protect Our Care President Brad Woodhouse issued the following statement:
“This bill is terrible, unserious, and a total non-starter. It raises premium costs for millions of people, it forces Americans into high deductible, high out-of-pocket cost plans, it undermines protections for pre-existing conditions, and it will result in many Americans to forgo coverage altogether. This bill is an insult, especially when there is legislation — a three-year clean extension of the current tax credits — that has the support of a bipartisan majority in the House and the Senate, not to mention the support of the American people.
“This is just another rogue plan to further Trump’s sabotage of the ACA by raising health care costs, blowing up protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and pushing people into plans that don’t cover them when they get sick. Put simply — this bill should be dead on arrival.”
Background:
Senator Moreno’s proposal fails to meet the needs of everyday Americans struggling to get by. His proposal:
- Hikes premium costs for middle-class families and small business owners.
- Pushes families to reduce their coverage and rely on HSAs that won’t cover their bills when they get sick.
- Drowns people with pre-existing conditions in medical debt.
- Recklessly raises out-of-pocket costs for over 10 million Americans through “cost-sharing reductions.”
- Eliminates $0 premiums that 8 million low-income Americans rely on to afford health care, especially in states that have not expanded Medicaid.
