Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, Republicans are holding another sham hearing where they will use bogus fraud claims as a cover to justify ripping away health care from millions of working Americans so they can fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Republicans can’t claim to be serious about fraud when Trump has repeatedly abused his power to pardon his fraudster friends who were convicted of stealing billions. Instead, Republicans are choosing to go after the care that people need most.
Seniors, people with disabilities, and family caregivers rely on Medicaid to get the care they need, supporting 5 out of every 8 nursing home residents and allowing more than 5 million people to receive care at home rather than in a facility. Without it, the average family would face $111,000 a year in long-term care bills — a crippling financial burden. If Republicans actually wanted to save money in health care, they wouldn’t have cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to hand out tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations.
In response, Protect Our Care Director of Policy Programs Vaishu Jawahar issued the following statement:
“These ridiculous claims of fraud in long-term care are sad distractions from the health care crisis Republicans created. They are using baseless claims of widespread fraud to kick seniors out of nursing homes and rip away care from millions of Americans. Without Medicaid, parents of children with disabilities lose vital support, family caregivers are pushed to the brink, and seniors lose the ability to remain in their homes and communities. If Republicans were serious about fraud, they wouldn’t be ripping away care. Period.”
