Washington, DC – Today, Nebraska will be the first state in the nation to roll out provisions of the big, ugly bill — offering Americans nationwide a bone-chilling glimpse of what’s to come when the law hits their state. Although states have eight more months to implement the law that Donald Trump and Republicans rammed through Congress to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, Nebraska Republicans decided to hastily move ahead even as Trump’s Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has yet to release long-overdue implementation guidance. Now, Nebraska’s new provisions are projected to rip health care away from 25,000 Cornhuskers, adding to the over 13,000 Nebraskans who have already lost their health care coverage since Trump and Republicans’ big, ugly bill cut over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.
In response, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:
“While tens of thousands of Cornhuskers are at risk of losing access to life-saving care today, it’s a cruel preview of what’s to come in the months ahead for millions of Americans. Trump and congressional Republicans knew this was how their big, ugly bill would play out, but they rammed it through Congress anyway, all to fund their tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Now, costs are skyrocketing for millions, hospitals are shutting down, and hard-working families are being forced to choose between putting food on the table and keeping a roof over their heads.
“Donald Trump and his allies in Congress viewed the public as collateral damage in their quest to further enrich the wealthy. Across the country, millions are witnessing the heartlessness of today’s Republican Party, and their memory will remain sharp when they head to the polls this November.”
