Washington D.C. — Just days after Protect Our Care’s “Sick of it! Fix Health Care Now” bus tour rolled through Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Des Moines, Donald Trump is headed  to Dubuque, Iowa for a last-ditch rally just two days before Election Day. Trump may be back to make his final sales pitch, but Iowa families aren’t buying what Republicans are selling.

This is a health care election, and the stakes couldn’t be higher. Representatives Mariannette Miller-Meeks and Zach Nunn happily voted alongside Trump and Congressional Republicans to gut Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations last year. Now, nearly 21,000 Iowans have lost their health care coverage, while families who relied on the tax credits Republicans gutted have been slammed with estimated average premium increases of 173% this year alone. Meanwhile, Iowa hospitals are projected to lose $8.9 billion over the next decade from Republican Medicaid cuts. 21 hospitals and health care providers across the state have already reportedly shuttered their doors, announced closure, or have been identified as at risk of doing so. Protect Our Care’s Adam Hoyer issued the following statement:

“We just spent last week traveling across Iowa, hearing firsthand from families struggling under the weight of Republican health care cuts, and now Trump is coming back for another round of the same tired political circus. I guess the rally he held last week wasn’t enough since he’s already back begging voters for another chance. Talk about desperation. He knows the Republican health care agenda has become a political liability for the GOP in the Midterms. Thanks to Republicans like Miller-Meeks and Nunn, Iowa families are paying more, worrying more, and getting less. And all for what? Another round of tax breaks for billionaires? Iowa families have been paying the price for these reckless cuts, and as Election Day approaches, Republicans will face a reckoning of their own at the ballot box.”

When Care Force One rolled through Iowa, State Sen. Mike Zimmer, Lindsay James, and Sarah Trone Garriott joined health care professionals and local storytellers to sound the alarm on the health care crisis unleashed by the GOP, share their struggles, and lay out a plan to rebuild health care once Democrats regain control this November.
