Washington, D.C. – Today, Trump is traveling to Long Island to visit law enforcement facilities in Nassau County, all while New York families get plunged deeper into a health care crisis of Republicans’ making. Just over a year ago, Republicans in Congress, including Long Island Reps. Andrew Garbarino (NY-02) and Nick LaLota (NY-01), passed the largest health care cuts in living memory, gutting over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. As a result of their sabotage agenda, New York families are making impossible choices between paying for their groceries and seeing their doctor. They are being forced to ration their medication, skip meals, or even forego coverage altogether just to make ends meet. Now, 8 million Americans, including over half a million New Yorkers, have lost the coverage they relied on, and families across the Empire State are being crushed by skyrocketing health care costs. Just last month, around 450,000 New Yorkers lost their coverage through New York’s Essential Plan after congressional Republicans cut funding for the program. The GOP’s health care crisis has also wrecked New York’s health care system, with 71 health care providers facing cuts, closure, or the risk of doing so.

BY THE NUMBERS: NEW YORKERS CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING MORE OR FOREGOING HEALTH CARE COVERAGE
- An estimated 501,239 New Yorkers have already lost the Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage they counted on to see a doctor after Republicans gutted health care.
- Additionally, approximately 450,000 New Yorkers just lost access to New York’s Essential Plan on July 1 after Trump and Republicans in Congress cut funding for the low-cost health plan.
- 860,000 New Yorkers total are anticipated to lose their health care between 2025 and 2034.
- Premiums for New Yorkers who counted on the health tax credits Republicans gutted increased by an average of 56% this year:
- A 45-year-old in New York making $64,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $4,508 to hit $9,948 this year.
- A 60-year-old couple in New York making $85,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $12,671 to hit $19,896 this year.
- A family of four in New York making $130,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $17,132 to hit $28,352 this year.
- Hospital systems nationwide are already reporting a surge in uninsured patients after Republicans ripped away health tax credits. New York hospitals and clinics are facing a $213 million loss in funding and a 1.3% spike in uncompensated care demand that will affect their ability to keep their doors open.
- New York hospitals alone are also expected to lose $41 billion over the next decade due to GOP Medicaid cuts. As of August 2026, 71 New York health care providers are at-risk, announced cuts, are closing, or have closed, including:
