Washington, D.C. – Today, Trump is heading to the Golden State to gaslight Californian families on his economic policies, which include the largest cuts to health care in American history. One year ago, Trump and Republicans in Congress slashed over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, setting off a health care crisis that has been relentlessly squeezing families’ budgets. After Republicans ripped away the health care tax credits that over 22 million Americans relied on to see a doctor, over 8 million Americans, including over 1.2 million Californians, lost their coverage. Californian families are being forced to make impossible choices between keeping food on the table or paying for their medication. Meanwhile, California’s health care system is being devastated by hospital closures, budget cuts, and layoffs, with providers set to lose $497 million. Already, 104 hospitals, wards, nursing homes, and care facilities across California are reducing services, laying off workers, or closing their doors all together, and the damage is only going to get worse.

They feel the strain on their budgets and the pit in their stomachs every time they see the cost of health care. After cutting over $1 trillion dollars from health care to hand tax breaks to billionaires and big corporations, Trump and Republicans have made it harder for Californians to afford the care they need most. Golden Staters are dropping coverage they can no longer afford, skipping doctors’ appointments, rationing their medication, and living with the constant fear that an emergency could push them deeper into debt. Countless clinics, hospitals, and essential health care providers are facing cuts, closing their doors, or are at risk of closing. This November, Californians won’t forget who drove up their health care costs and made it that much harder to keep their coverage.”
BY THE NUMBERS: CALIFORNIANS CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING MORE OR FOREGOING HEALTH CARE COVERAGE
- An estimated 1.2 million Californians have already lost their Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage after Republicans gutted health care.

- GOP cuts will result in $1 billion in cuts to dental services for low-income Californians in 2027.
- California was forced to cut Medi-Cal coverage of lifesaving and chronic disease preventing GLP-1 medications as a result of GOP cuts, which could leave as many as over half a million Californians unable to fill their prescription.
- California hospitals alone are expected to lose just under $118.9 billion over the next decade due to GOP Medicaid cuts and thanks to Republicans gutting the premium tax credits and hiking Californians’ premiums, providers in California will lose an additional $497 million in 2026 alone.
