Washington D.C. – During her Senate confirmation hearing today, Trump Surgeon General nominee Casey Means refused to commit to urging the public to get vaccinated for measles, flu or whooping cough despite the alarming spread of these preventable diseases among unvaccinated Americans under the Trump administration’s anti-vax agenda – confirming the warnings raised by Protect Our Care and other leading health advocacy groups.
“At bare minimum, the responsibility of a Surgeon General is to educate the public on how to avoid serious health risks,” said Kayla Hancock, Director of Public Health Watch, a project of Protect Our Care. “For Casey Means to admit she has no intention of doing her job of encouraging Americans to get vaccinated against measles amid the worst measles outbreak in over 30 years is like a firefighter refusing to work with water. This is a disqualifying admission, and it makes a lot more sense why Means is not authorized to practice medicine. Means ought to stick to her grifting business rather than use taxpayer money to put the public’s health at risk. She’s too damn dangerous to be Surgeon General.”
