The Momnibus Would End the Maternal Health Crisis, Help Ensure That Every Woman Can Access Safe, Affordable, High-Quality Maternity Care

Washington, D.C. — On Thursday, August 6, 2026, at 11 AM ET, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), Former CMS Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, and health care providers will join Protect Our Care to discuss why the Momnibus is more important than ever as Donald Trump and Republicans’ health care cuts are putting maternity care further out of reach for moms and babies.

The press call is part of Protect Our Care’s nationwide Sick of it! Fix Health Care Nowcampaign, which is giving voice to the millions of Americans rightfully sick of Trump and Republicans in Congress gutting our health care system to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. It also comes as Senator Booker reintroduces the Momnibus in the Senate, as a companion to the House of Representatives bill introduced by Reps. Lauren Underwood (D-IL-14) and Alma Adams (D-NC-12).

Background

The Momnibus Act is a comprehensive package of 14 individual bills that would end preventable maternal deaths by addressing maternal health disparities, growing and diversifying the perinatal health workforce, expanding access to maternal mental health and substance use care, lowering healthcare costs, investing in technological solutions, closing research gaps, improving data collection, and providing direct federal funding for local community-based organizations that improve maternal health outcomes.

The growing maternal health crisis is one of the many reasons Americans are sick of it: Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress are driving up costs and ripping away the health care people, including mothers and children, count on, slashing more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and ending the health care tax credits. Medicaid is the nation’s largest payer of maternal health and funds care for over 40 percent of births, yet GOP cuts have put maternity care at risk. Since the day Trump signed H.R. 1 into law, over 50 maternity care providers, from labor and delivery units to OB/GYN clinics, have shuttered. At a time when the United States has the highest rate of maternal deaths among high-income nations, and Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, the need to fix our health care has never been more urgent.
