Washington D.C. – Following the Senate’s confirmation today of Dr. Erica Schwartz as CDC director, sooner or later she will find herself at a crossroads with Donald Trump and HHS Secretary Kennedy over their active and aggressive anti-vax agenda that has exacerbated the record-breaking measles crisis.
During her confirmation hearing, Dr. Schwartz vowed to promote vaccines but repeatedly refused to pledge to stand up to RFK Jr. if he asks her to compromise science and her independence at the expense of public health. While she claimed Kennedy would never put her in that position, just last April the Secretary flatly refused to commit to Congress that he will not interfere with the new CDC director’s vaccine guidance.
The last Senate-approved Trump CDC director was forced out in less than a month because she refused RFK Jr.’s demands to “pre-approve vaccine recommendations for the public and fire career scientists.” How will this time be any different?
“Director Schwartz just walked into the anti-vax lion’s den at the Trump HHS,” said Protect Our Care’s Jeremy Funk. “It’s not a question of if but when RFK Jr. and Donald Trump will meddle with CDC vaccine guidance and likely overrule Director Schwartz based on conspiracies and falsehoods. Just ask the last ‘permanent’ CDC director that was given the boot for not bowing to RFK Jr.’s anti-vax demands. If Dr. Schwartz is truly committed to the science on vaccine safety and efficacy, she better steel her resolve in the interest of public health, or keep her resume on hand.”
