Families across the country are already feeling the devastating consequences of Republicans’ health care cuts, and a new KFF analysis shows the pain is only going to get worse as insurers propose a median 15 percent premium hike. This comes on the heels of premiums doubling and tripling for over 22 million Americans last year after the GOP prioritized tax breaks for billionaires over health care for working families. The findings are the latest evidence of the damage caused by Republicans’ ripping away the ACA tax credits that lowered costs for working families, which has already driven millions off their coverage. 

BY THE NUMBERS

Thanks to GOP premium hikes, three million fewer Americans have ACA coverage and the average American buying health care on their own is already paying $1,000 more before their insurer pays a single penny. This year, the ripple effect of Republicans putting billionaires first continue:

  • Insurers across the country are planning a median proposed premium increase of 15 percent for nearly 20 million Americans
  • This is the second consecutive year of double-digit premium hikes and the second-highest requested rate change since 2018
  • If these early indications hold, typical premiums for insurers participating in the ACA Marketplaces will have skyrocketed by more than one-third over a two-year period
  • Premiums may go up as much as 54 percent under some plans:
  • 1.2 million Georgians are facing an average 21 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 54 percent in 2027.
  • 472,000 Pennysylvanians are facing an average 17 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 40 percent in 2027.
  • 186,000 New Yorkers are facing an average 21 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 52 percent in 2027.
  • 23,000 Alaskans are facing an average 23 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 27 percent in 2027.
  • 250,000 Arizonans could see their premiums increase as much as 34 percent in 2027.
  • 330,000 Wisconsinites could see their premiums increase as much as 31 percent in 2027.
  • 600,000 North Carolinians could see their premiums increase as much as 28 percent in 2027.
  • 330,000 Ohioans could see their premiums increase as much as 24 percent in 2027.
  • 330,000 Virginians could see their premiums increase as much as 23 percent in 2027.
  • 57,000 Granite Staters could see their premiums increase as much as 22 percent in 2027.
  • 360,000 Michiganders are facing an average 10 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 20 percent in 2027.
  • 1.8 million Californians are facing an average 10 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 20 percent in 2027.
  • 240,000 Coloradans are facing an average 13 percent rate hike and could see their premiums increase as much as 24 percent in 2027.
