One year ago, Trump and congressional Republicans slashed over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to bankroll tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Thanks to this callous decision, over 1,000 hospitals, nursing homes, maternity wards, and other critical providers nationwide have shuttered, cut essential services, or are at risk of doing so.
In Alabama, China Bleicher, who is 39 weeks pregnant, has to find a new doctor after her local hospital closed its labor and delivery unit. The closure was “stressful” as she needed a doctor who was seeing patients “immediately.” In Oklahoma, a dermatology clinic is closing, pointing to Republicans’ H.R. 1 as the reason why. Now, a four-to six-month wait for new patients will get “even worse.” In Arizona, the only OB-GYN provider in a town of 70,000 people is ending its labor and delivery service. Now, women in Casa Grande will have to drive an hour to the next nearest provider, which increases the risk to both mom and baby. The consequences of Republican health care cuts are wreaking havoc on the care people rely on in every corner of the country.
