Trump and Republicans in Congress are ripping a lifeline from working families, choosing to gut Medicaid to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Everyone, everywhere, regardless of where they get their coverage, will pay the price. From Arizona to Vermont, health care costs are soaring, budgets are being irreparably squeezed, and millions are being kicked off their lifesaving coverage. Over 1,250 hospitals, clinics and essential service providers have closed, cut services, or are at risk of doing so.
As NC Governor Josh Stein put it in a recent op-ed: “When people lose their insurance, they do not stop getting sick. Instead, they do not pick up their medications because they cannot afford them. They skip the primary care visit because it would mean just another bill. They wait until a manageable problem becomes a crisis and then head to the emergency department, where care is far more expensive.” This puts increasing strain on our hospital system and drives up costs for everyone.
As states are forced to implement the GOP’s onerous work requirements, it will only make it harder for working families to stay covered. Millions of otherwise eligible Americans will lose their coverage, including Americans living with cancer, serious disabilities, chronic illnesses and other complex medical conditions.
Working families are sick of the GOP’s health care crisis. They are sick of watching their neighbors, their parents, and their communities lose care. Protect Our Care is channeling this frustration with “Sick of It! Fix Health Care Now”, our latest grassroots campaign to date. This month, we’ve hit the road, taking this message to communities all across the country on our nationwide bus tour.
