Republicans head into the midterms facing a tougher political environment than the one that cost them the House in 2018, when health care was a defining issue for voters. Donald Trump is even less popular, and Americans’ views of the economy have deteriorated dramatically: just 27% approve of Trump’s handling of the economy, down 22 points from 2018. And once again, health care is shaping up to be a defining issue, putting Republicans on the defensive — only this time they have a record of slashing Medicaid, ripping away health care tax credits, and driving up costs. Recent polling shows just how far Republicans have fallen behind — what Quinnipiac University Polling Analyst Tim Malloy called “a warning light flashing red for the GOP scrambling to stay in power.”
