With the midterms fast approaching, Donald Trump’s $500 health care “refund” checks are hitting mailboxes, a shameless attempt to cover up the devastation left in the wake of the $1 trillion he gutted from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Meanwhile, working families across the country are struggling to keep their heads above water as health insurance premiums continue to soar. This year, the average ACA Marketplace premium reached approximately $741 a month. Trump’s one-time $500 payment wouldn’t even cover a single month’s bill.
Now, families across the country are bracing for another round of double-digit premium hikes, with rates climbing 17% in Nevada, 20% in Georgia, and nearly 30% in Arizona. These soaring prices are pushing people off their coverage nationwide. In July alone, 400,000 New Yorkers were forced off their essential state coverage due to skyrocketing premiums. And some of those families managing to hold on to their coverage are being forced into high-deductible plans that could cause them to delay necessary medical care.
Hardworking families are tired of these political stunts by the Trump administration. What they need is health care they can actually afford and the peace of mind that they can get the care they need without breaking the bank.
