Recent reporting from the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal exposes the alarming consequences of Republicans’ health care cuts, with hard-working families rapidly losing the coverage they depend on and hospitals inundated with a flood of uninsured patients. The cost of premiums has spiraled out of control after Republicans let premium tax credits expire, driving up health care costs for over 22 million Americans who relied on them to afford coverage. On top of that, last summer Republicans passed the largest health care cuts in living memory, slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the ACA to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Now, working Americans are making impossible choices just to make ends meet. Cancer survivor and small business owner Mark Steigerwald from Wisconsin faced sticker shock after his premium nearly tripled from $938/month to $2,743/month. Suzanne and Kip Mercer from Florida were forced to drop their coverage after their premiums rose to $4,000/month. They have since avoided seeing their doctors. As the fallout from Republicans’ health care cuts ripples across the country, countless more Americans will continue to pay the price.
