Washington, D.C. – Today, Trump is heading to northeast Ohio to attend the “Patriot Games,” while Ohioan families pay the price for the GOP’s health care crisis. Last summer, Trump and Republicans in Congress made the largest cuts to health care in American history, slashing over $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Then, at the end of last year, they ripped away the health care tax credits that over 22 million Americans relied on to see a doctor.
These devastating health care cuts have caused premiums to skyrocket and out-of-pocket costs to soar. Families’ budgets are being squeezed, and many are skipping doctor’s appointments or losing coverage to make ends meet. This unthinkable balancing act has thrown 8 million Americans off their coverage, including over 360,000 Ohioans, with Ohio leading the nation in the percentage of those who dropped ACA coverage. These cuts have also wrecked Ohio’s health care system, with 38 hospitals, clinics, and other critical providers facing cuts, closure, or the risk of closure since the passage of H.R. 1.

BY THE NUMBERS: OHIOANS CHOOSE BETWEEN PAYING MORE OR FOREGOING HEALTH CARE COVERAGE
- An estimated 360,734 Ohioans have already lost their Medicaid, CHIP, or ACA coverage after Republicans gutted health care.
- 135,799 Ohioans have been kicked off of Medicaid and CHIP.
- 224,935 Ohioans dropped their health care coverage after premiums skyrocketed, with program enrollment dropping 30–40% between early 2025 estimates and February 2026 — the highest in the nation.
- 460,000 Ohioans total are anticipated to lose their health care between 2025 and 2034.
- Premiums for Ohioans receiving ACA tax credits increased by an average of 149% this year:
- A 45-year-old in Ohio making $64,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $1,516 to hit $6,956 this year.
- A 60-year-old couple in Ohio making $85,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $18,921 to hit $26,146 this year.
- A family of four in Ohio making $130,000 saw their average annual premium costs rise by $8,632 to hit $19,682 this year.
- Thanks to Republicans gutting the premium tax credits and hiking Ohioans’ premiums, providers in Ohio will lose an additional $363 million in funding and face a 10.3% spike in uncompensated care demand.
- Ohio hospitals alone are expected to lose nearly just under $22.4 billion over the next decade due to GOP Medicaid cuts. 38 Ohio health care providers are at-risk, announced cuts, are closing, or have closed, including:
