Washington D.C. – Yet more chaos and disarray within the Trump FDA have come to light. STAT News reports that drug manufacturer Sanofi is now asking the agency to pull its new type 1 diabetes drug from review after Trump political appointee, Tracy Beth Høeg, overruled career FDA scientists on approval.
When Høeg became the fifth head of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research Director so far this Trump term, she immediately set off alarms even from colleagues about “her ability to oversee drug regulation without bias”. Høeg was also among the loudest advocates of the CDC downgrading the child vaccine schedule without a shred of scientific evidence justifying it.
Chaos, Incompetence, Rinse, Repeat: Revelations of Hoeg’s questionable obstruction follows news this week that the FDA blocked public release of research finding Covid and Shingles vaccines to be safe, as well as disturbing revelations that Donald Trump berated FDA Commissioner Marty Makary for not approving harmful and addictive flavored vapes fast enough based on Trump’s belief it will appeal to “young MAGA voters”, resulting in Makary “weighing becoming more open to vape flavor approval.” Meanwhile, the FDA’s controversial anti-vax Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research Vinay Prasad is leaving this month after a string of erratic and reckless behavior.
“The Trump-RFK Jr. FDA has been embroiled in a credibility and stability crisis since Day 1, thanks to mass layoffs, staff revolt, and risky, unfounded policy moves motivated by politics, not science,” said Kayla Hancock, Director of Protect Our Care’s Public Health Project. “The constant turmoil inspires little to no confidence that public health is a bigger FDA priority than favors for dangerous special interests like big vape. The more that unqualified Trump political appointees obstruct and silence career scientists, the more we should all worry that life-saving drugs and vaccines aren’t seeing the light of day, and what horribles Trump’s industry donors are getting a pass on.”
